An homage to the can-do attitude of architects and designers of the 1950s & 1960s, when the American and specifically Californian attitude said that man can do anything that he could imagine. Googie architecture reflected a space-age optimism that is being slowly demolished throughout the county as “progress” claims that boomerangs & sputniks are tacky & kitsch. The Orange County Googie Archive aims to document the remaining examples of Googie architecture in Orange County, while they last.

Great signs. I love the palm trees and the reverse look.
We were driving around Orange County 2 weekends ago and I spotted the "Jubilee" sign in one of your earlier posts. I told my wife that HAD to be from a bygone era - and remarked to her about the "satellite" at the top of the sign. Why these things aren't preserved and refurbished I'll never understand.
The more time marches on - the cooler these things become. Much of the signage and architecture of this era is before my birth - but it was omni-present when I was a child - because it was only 'several years old' when it seeped into my eyes.
Anything and everything should be done to preserve America's mid-century architecture. The popularity of artist's like SHAG, the desirability of homes designed by Eichler, the resurgence in interest in George Nelson - only serves to re-inforce that the style of that era is STILL very cool and very comforting to large sections of Americans.
Those of us in or entering our 40's probably didn't realize how "space age" our man made landscape was at the time - but, compared to the endless acres of "Nouveaux Faux Mission" architecture that has taken hold - I'll take the mid-century sytlings anyday.
Someone should document Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank before all those great buildings are gone too.
I remember back in the early 1960's when the two palm trees for which the shopping center is apparently named (not shown in the photo) were small. If I remember correctly, "Twin Palms Realty" was the dominant business.
I sometimes patronize the Friendly Hills Cleaners shown in the photo, as well as Las Palmas, a Mexican restaurant also located in the mall
